Q:I am designing a new residential estate. I want the back gardens to be as large as possible so I want to put the boundary fence astride the boundary line. Can I do this?

Yes, provided you inform the adjoining owner by serving a notice on him under the Party Wall Act 1996 and your neighbour does not object.
