Redfern headlines Housing Market Intelligence 2012

Taylor Wimpey ceo Pete Redfern delivered the keynote speech at the Housing Market Intelligence conference held on October 3rd 2012 in London.

More than 250 delegates attended the event which as ever boasted a packed programme of high level speakers. The conference was entitled “Delivering the Government’s Housing Strategy”, but Redfern called on the government to ensure that it actually had a clear strategy “not a long list of initiatives”.

In an entertaining presentation, Redfern looked back five years to when Taylor Woodrow and Wimpey merged to form his new organisation then travelled five years forward from now to examine how the industry might look in 2017.

DCLG director general Peter Schofield challenged the industry to innovate and adapt and to be open to new ways of working. The success of the UK economy was reliant on housebuilding, he said.

The conference was chaired by HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley, and HBF fielded two speakers – director of economic affairs John Stewart and director of planning Andrew Whitaker.

Bob Pannell of the Council of Mortgage Lenders and Stephen Noakes, director of mortgages at Lloyds Bank, gave their views on the outlook for the mortgage sector and Banner Homes ceo Richard Werth put forward the perspective of the private sector housebuilder.

Sir John Banham gave the audience a taste of the recommendations of the upcoming Future Homes Commission report which is set to call for a three-fold increase in new housebuilding driven by a ten-fold boost in homes built for rent and shared ownership.

Dr Diana Montgomery, new ceo of the Construction Products Association, gave the view from the products sector and Anthony Codling, md of investment bank Jefferies International, wrapped up the day with a City perspective of the industry.
