Housing Market Intelligence Annual Conference and Report Launch
The Housing Market Intelligence (HMI) conference and report luanch, which took place on Wednesday 15 October at Savoy Place, London, provided delegates with a view of the housing market in its present state from various angles – strategic, economic, financial and consumer - and what steps could be taken to improve housebuilders’ business strategies, particularly important in a turbulent market.

Speakers in the morning’s first session gave an overview of the market. New housing minister Margaret Beckett delivered a keynote speech which confirmed her support for the housebuilding industry and stressed the need to “strike a balance between realism and ambition” when tackling the many difficulties the industry faced.
The mid-morning session saw speakers address the market, money and mortgages. John Stewart, HBF’s director of economic affairs, detailed his outlook for the housing market and looked at the pre-credit crunch climate that may have led to the current market malaise.
HMI’s afternoon sessions concentrated on how success could be achieved by housebuilders and how best to deliver. Much ground was covered, including the management of cost pressures and risk in residential development as told by Richard Jones, head of residential, regeneration and growth at EC Harris, and the affordable housing opportunities available to private housebuilders, presented by business development director of Wates, Paul O’Driscoll.
